I have been playing the recorder for over 60 years and I have been teaching for over 40 years. I have previously taught single and ensemble lessons to children, young people and adults at all levels. My ensembles have played at the National Festival of Music for Youth in the RFH, and also as Finalists in the ERTA Junior Ensemble competition. in 2000, my Junior Ensemble were Worcestershire Young Musicians. Former students of mine have also gone on to study Music at University. A few years ago, I taught at Dartington College when it was still based in Dartington, and my BA student gained a 1st Class Honours degree in performance. I have also regularly entered students for exams and festivals, where they have reached merit and honours standards. I believe that the recorder CAN be taught properly from the early stages, even though it is an uphill battle against prejudice of the sounds that are sometimes made. As a performer, I have played chamber music and solo concerts, including Brandenburg Concertos, works by Purcell and Handel, and Monteverdi Vespers. Although I have a wide background in teaching and performing, there are few students coming forward these days. In a local school, they teach the Dood and the Toot, which are horrible! (As well as the ukelele)(But so far, not the ocarina!)
