The Picardy Players
Angela Burgess Recital Hall, London, 7:45pm, free (ticket required)The 10 musicians of the Picardy Players give a rare glimpse into life in Kyivan Rus’ in the Middle Ages, through music inspired by fascinating personal letters written on strips of birch bark that were unearthed in recent decades. The programme uses an otherworldly 16th-century musical language from Renaissance Italy with 31 notes to the octave and period instruments to bridge the gap historically between the protagonists’ world and our own. New compositions by James Batty draw inspiration from Slavic folk music from Ukraine and Russia to tell the characters’ stories, and are enriched with visual and tactile elements. The programme is framed by microtonal gems written 400 years apart by Nicola Vicentino and György Ligeti.

10.00 AMAirForce Recorder Day
Please note that this time everyone will be playing the same piece with 26 parts, and so everyone needs to sign up here and then we will allocate you a part. As always you should be a reliable player and be able to hold your part in an ensemble without any problem. You should be able to play all the instruments from descant to bass, and be prepared to study your part in advance. It is important that you are able to follow a conductor.
Colin Touchin, Amber Road (2010)
Colin Touchin passed away on 30 September 2022. In memory of him, and of everything he did for the recorder world, we will focus this Air-Force day on his tour-de-force piece “The Amber Road” for Chamber Orchestra, Large Orchestra and Quartet (in total 26 parts!).
The Amber Road was an ancient route from Europe to Asia and back, and from northern Africa to the Baltic Sea, facilitating the transfer of amber, an important raw material. Findings from prehistoric times prove that trade along this corridor existed long before Roman times.
The music aims to convey some impressions of both history and travel without being too specific as to exactly when or where. The journey of the piece begins simply and ends almost where it began: on the way there are variations of the chant theme originally voiced by the four soloists in unison and a sequence of reflective and energetic passages exploiting the resources and sonorities of massed and chamber orchestral textures. Colin’s aim was to make three different sonorities, working on the principles of Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro and Vaughan Williams’ Tallis Fantasia.
The Amber Road was premiered by NYRO in Manchester on 31 July 2010 and will be played at this event in Colin Touchin's memory..
